The Kite Runner
The Kite Runner is a story about Amir, son of a rich merchant of the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul and his friend Hassan who happens to be the son of his father’s servant. Inspite of being a Hazara, Hassan has a huge influence over Amir’s life.
Amir
was a disappointing child to his father. The Kite flying competition held in Wazir Akbar Khan, as seen by Amir was his only hope to be a worthy son. Although he manages to win not just
the kite flying event but also his father’s heart, he loses the only loyal
friend he ever had and ended up awarding himself with an indignant life. Even the good times with
his father presumably ended rather quickly while to make the matter gross, the soviets raged war on Afghanistan.
As
a result of the failing monarchy and soviets intervention in Afghanistan along
with the consequent Taliban regime, thousands of Afghans moved out to find refuge in Pakistan and US.
After an eventful journey of sneaking out to Pakistan, Amir and his father found
themselves in an absolutely new situation with meagre ways of living.
The
old man’s only contentment before dying of
cancer was seeing his son as a happy bridegroom. Amir’s complacency gets a blow that came in the form of Rahim Khan’s message which changed his total course of life, and Amir ends up in
a deathly pursuit which he could not withhold so as to make up a more meaningful
life.
